Mass on October 31st – On Monday, October 31 at 4:00 PM Fr. Zendejas will offer Mass and Benediction. Confession before Mass as usual. Oct. 31 is considered by the Church to be the vigil of a great feast: All Saints’ Day. To celebrate the Feast of Christ the King (October 30) and All Saints Day (November 1), we will have Benediction after Mass, followed by a potluck and All Saints party. And for those with the time, resources, and inclination, dressing up as a Saint is most welcome! (but not required)

More Chapel Improvements – The new altar has been stained dark brown to match the chapel’s color scheme. The solid concrete sidewalk has also been lengthened by 15 feet, replacing dozens of paver bricks. And when you come on the 31st, you’ll see the other surprise we’ve been talking about!

Continued Chapel Improvements – On the day after the most recent Mass at St. Dominic’s, we began several chapel improvement projects. Work is being done to stain the new altar. The chapel sidewalk has also been lengthened by 10 feet, replacing dozens of paver bricks. And stay tuned for the announcement of another major chapel improvement!

Continued Chapel Improvements – It is easier to do construction projects when the chapel is closed, even if that closure is only temporary. So last Monday we began several chapel improvement projects. Work is being done to stain the new altar. The chapel sidewalk will also be enlarged, replacing more of the paver bricks. We have at least one other surprise planned.

Mass Time Change – Next Sunday (the 25th), Mass with be at 7:30 in the morning. There will not be Mass at 4:00 PM. Meanwhile, Bishop Williamson will be offering a High Mass at 9:30 AM Sept. 25 at Stella Maris Chapel (1131 Delaney Rd, La Marque, TX) followed by a potluck and conference.
Mission Pilgrimage Cancelled – We have been forced to cancel the Mission Pilgrimage originally planned for October 22nd. If we have Mass that week, it will likely be a substitute priest.

Progress on New Altar, Backdrop, and Altar Step

On late Saturday, we finished building the new altar. Earlier this week, the hardwood flooring was installed on the altar step, and many hours were spent improving the look of the white backdrop.

Still to be done: install altar trim, stain the altar dark brown, building another gradine (a wooden box placed on the altar, on which the candlesticks are set) and other finishing touches.

Chapel Bulletin – 7th Sunday after Pentecost – July 3, 2016

High Mass today – Today is the 1st Sunday of the month, so we will have a High Mass followed by a Potluck.
From the Choir – For the High Mass today, we will be singing Mass IV (Cunctipotens Genitor Deus) and Credo IV. The hymns for today’s Mass are all included in the flyers in the back of the chapel.
Hoping to Build an Altar – We are currently saving all available funds (from the Building Fund/Donation Can) to build a wooden altar for the chapel. The general goal is a custom-built wooden altar, about the size of our current makeshift altar, dark brown in color, with attractive, elaborate trim, which won’t require a veil to hang over the front to hide what is underneath. Perhaps engrave “Viva Cristo Rey” or “IHS” on the front of it. It will have extra depth towards the back, to add a “part 2” at a later date, which will rise upwards about six feet, mounted to the back of the altar. The altar will also have a place for an altar stone, and a means to secure the tabernacle to it. In any case, we will be keeping the dark brown “gradines” currently on the altar, as well as our large Crucifix.
Traditional Catholic question – Must any Traditional Latin Masses be offered under the auspices of an organization and/or with the approval of Rome? Answer: No. Regarding the question of Roman approval: Post-Vatican II Rome has become drunk with the heresy of Modernism, with the highest officials trying to destroy the Church with their own hands. The exact nature of this Crisis in the Church is mysterious, and we have to remember that God is in control. But what is certain is that we must keep and practice the Catholic Faith, and save our immortal souls here in 2016. We can’t wait for normal times to return. The Crisis is the Church has been ongoing for over 47 years now! Priests, bishops, and laymen must all do the right thing — with or without the permission of Rome. In the Catholic Church, “the highest law is the salvation of souls.” When Truth and Authority mysteriously split, we have no choice but to choose Truth — the only thing that will get us to heaven. Jesus Christ is the Truth. As for the question of an organization, that is more or less irrelevant. The only real issue is authority/jurisdiction, and the Catholic Church provides us “supplied jurisdiction” during emergency situations like the one we are living in today. Unless a given organization has been approved by Rome, it has the same standing as any individual Traditional Catholic priest offering the Tridentine Mass without Rome’s permission. The only difference is that an organization has many priests, while the individual priest is alone. But, in reality, both are equally legitimate given the emergency situation we are in.

High Mass next week – Next Sunday is the 1st Sunday of the month, so we will have a High Mass followed by a Potluck.
SSPX Superiors Meeting – Though they wish to keep it a secret, the SSPX superiors are in fact having a meeting June 26-28 in Switzerland, during which they will discuss the latest proposal from Rome for a practical agreement. Apparently they were so keen on secrecy that they forgot a basic Catholic behavior: while considering such an important and far-reaching decision, they should solicit the prayers of the Faithful.
Traditional Catholicism 101 – Traditional Catholics are those who love the Catholic Faith and doctrine, and want to remain faithful during this unprecedented Crisis in the Church. And what is the Crisis? That truth and authority are at odds with each other! We must choose “truth”, because we have to keep the Faith and save our souls. Therefore we leave our local parishes (which have authority over us, from the Pope down through our local bishops) and seek out priests with valid orders who will offer 100% certain Masses and preach only pre-Vatican II, error-free Catholic doctrine. Catholics have a right to doubt-free Masses and Sacraments; this is the primary principle of the Traditional movement. An “indult” or permission from the Pope or local bishop is not necessary. The encyclical “Quo Primum” of Pope St. Pius V states that the Tridentine Mass can be offered by any priest, and attended by any Catholic, without scruple (i.e., concern that he is doing something wrong).
Over 13 Months of Masses – Frs. Zendejas and Garcia have been making the 3 1/4 to 4 1/2 hour trip from Houston to Seguin every Sunday for over 13 months now! (since May 10, 2015.) During that time, they only missed one Sunday, when Bishop Faure visited the United States last November. We are most grateful to our priests for their dedication in making the drive here every Sunday.

For we are buried together with him by baptism into death; that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath any thing against thee; Leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother: and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.

About 1 year ago, June 14th 2015. The chapel has come a long way since then!

 

Here is the chapel, less than 1 year later. Wooden pews, Stations of the Cross, Mass vestments, pictures, kneeler, holy water font, altar upgrades, A/C upgrades, sidewalk upgrades, and dozens of other improvements and upgrades. Plus we have an organist now. A big thank you to all our benefactors (both far and near) over the past year — may God reward you!

Benediction Today – We will have Benediction after Mass, since today is the 3rd Sunday of the month.
Bishop Williamson coming to St. Dominic’s – Next Sunday, May 22nd, His Excellency Bishop Richard Williamson will be offering a High Mass at St. Dominic’s. There will be a potluck afterwards. His Excellency hasn’t been to the San Antonio area since 2005. This is an excellent opportunity to meet him and hear him in person!

Chapel Improvements – Work is underway to make St. Dominic’s look as beautiful as possible for the Bishop’s visit. We had a beautiful High Mass about two weeks ago.

It all came together —

* the singing (including Fr. Garcia, who has a good singing voice)
* the High Mass itself, said with strict attention to the Rubrics.
* the Mass server is quite a professional, even in the role of MC at High Mass
* the choir, the organist
* the beautiful Easter hymns – Regina Caeli Jubila, Hail True Victim Life and Light, Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Salve Festa Dies, Vidi Aquam
* the Paschal candle lit, along with the other 6 candles on the altar
* Sweet-smelling incense
* the Easter lilies were still mostly alive, plus we have artificial white flowers to supplement. We also had real pink roses for the Blessed Mother statue.

I don’t think it was a coincidence that Fr. Garcia mentioned during his sermon “the material things of the Liturgy”. He talked about the symbolism of incense, he mentioned chant and other elements we see and hear at Mass. I suppose he found the Mass to be beautiful as well!

Rejoice Sunday – Today is Laetare (Latin, “Rejoice”) Sunday, or the half-way point of Lent. We should look back and assess our Lent so far, and redouble our efforts going forward. Only 3 weeks until Easter! Because of the feast today, the altar is decorated with flowers unlike the other Sundays of Lent.
More New Sidewalk – The chapel’s concrete sidewalk has been extended to 64 feet long! The sidewalk is necessary whenever it rains, due to mud and water runoff. If you wish to make a donation towards this chapel improvement, you can use the donation can on the table by the main entrance.

Fr. Voigt Mass – Next Sunday (January 31st), we welcome back Fr. Richard Voigt who will be visiting St. Dominic’s to offer Mass. It also happens to be the feast of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian order. Fr. Voigt is a Salesian priest who came to Tradition several years ago and was conditionally ordained by Bishop Williamson.

New Sidewalk – We poured 20 more feet of chapel sidewalk using 4,000 lbs (2 tons) of concrete! If you wish to make a donation towards this chapel improvement, you can use the donation can on the table by the main entrance.
Catholic Faith Fact – On Septuagesima (Greek for “seventy days”), the Church turns her attention to the coming season of Lent. Easter is now less than 70 days away, and we should begin thinking about what sacrifices we will offer up this Lent. Another name for Lent is Quadragesima or “the Forty Days”, referring to the forty days’ fast Our Lord performed in the desert right before He began His public ministry.

Sidewalk Improvements

St. Dominic’s chapel now has a 4-foot-wide concrete sidewalk by the main entrance. So far, this permanent portion of sidewalk is 16 feet long. This should make life a lot easier, especially on rainy days. The San Antonio and Austin areas have received a lot of rain during April, May and June.

The second section alone took 24 bags of concrete — that’s about 3/4 of a ton!

It really makes getting to the chapel a lot more pleasant. More sections of sidewalk will follow in the Fall, when it cools off a bit.

Corpus Christi – Benediction

Here are a couple pictures from last Sunday’s Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The hymns sung during the service (O Salutaris Hostia, Ave Maria, Oremus Pro Pontifice, Tantum Ergo, Adoremus in Aeternum, and Holy God We Praise Thy Name) were prepared into booklets, so everyone could easy follow along and join in the singing.  The singing went well, too — we had a sufficient choir, so the singing was on-key.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after Mass this Sunday, June 7th

Fr. Zendejas will offer the Mass this Sunday, June 7th, and after Mass there will be an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

This Sunday is the solemnity of the Feast of Corpus Christi.
