Bishop Zendejas – On May 11th 2017, Fr. Gerardo Zendejas was consecrated a bishop by Bishops Richard Williamson, Jean-Michel Faure and Thomas Aquinas at St. Athanasius Chapel in Vienna, VA before a crowd of 400+ faithful. Ad multos annos! Viva Cristo Rey!

High Mass on May 24th – On Wednesday, May 24th (the day before Ascension Thursday, and the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians) at 4:00 PM, His Excellency, Bishop Zendejas will offer a High Mass at St. Dominic’s Chapel. During this Mass there will be a First Communion, and a May Crowning after Mass. There will also be a potluck as usual. Please join us to celebrate this special occasion with the new Bishop!

Oct. 31 is considered by the Church to be the vigil of a great feast: All Saints’ Day. To celebrate the Feast of Christ the King (October 30) and All Saints Day (November 1), we will have Benediction after Mass, followed by a potluck and All Saints party. And for those with the time, resources, and inclination, dressing up as a Saint is most welcome! (but not required)

More Chapel Improvements – The new altar has been stained dark brown to match the chapel’s color scheme. The solid concrete sidewalk has also been lengthened by 15 feet, replacing dozens of paver bricks. And when you come on the 31st, you’ll see the other surprise we’ve been talking about!

Continued Chapel Improvements – On the day after the most recent Mass at St. Dominic’s, we began several chapel improvement projects. Work is being done to stain the new altar. The chapel sidewalk has also been lengthened by 10 feet, replacing dozens of paver bricks. And stay tuned for the announcement of another major chapel improvement!

Continued Chapel Improvements – It is easier to do construction projects when the chapel is closed, even if that closure is only temporary. So last Monday we began several chapel improvement projects. Work is being done to stain the new altar. The chapel sidewalk will also be enlarged, replacing more of the paver bricks. We have at least one other surprise planned.

Mass Time Change – Next Sunday (the 25th), Mass with be at 7:30 in the morning. There will not be Mass at 4:00 PM. Meanwhile, Bishop Williamson will be offering a High Mass at 9:30 AM Sept. 25 at Stella Maris Chapel (1131 Delaney Rd, La Marque, TX) followed by a potluck and conference.
Mission Pilgrimage Cancelled – We have been forced to cancel the Mission Pilgrimage originally planned for October 22nd. If we have Mass that week, it will likely be a substitute priest.

Progress on New Altar, Backdrop, and Altar Step

On late Saturday, we finished building the new altar. Earlier this week, the hardwood flooring was installed on the altar step, and many hours were spent improving the look of the white backdrop.

Still to be done: install altar trim, stain the altar dark brown, building another gradine (a wooden box placed on the altar, on which the candlesticks are set) and other finishing touches.

Excuse Our Mess – Due to the various construction projects (altar, altar step, backdrop) the chapel is still recovering from the experience. The chapel was a cluttered, sawdust-strewn construction zone as recently as Saturday at 8:00 PM. We hope to finish the chapel cleaning at the earliest opportunity.

Benediction Next Week – Next week is the 3rd Sunday of the month, so we will have Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament following the Mass.
A Look Ahead – on the first Sunday of August, we will be having our annual parish festival in honor of our patron saint, St. Dominic. His feast day is August 4th. Besides the usual High Mass and potluck, we will also have some games for the adults and children. Games will include saints trivia, musical chairs, tug of war, water balloons, etc.
Hoping to Build an Altar – We are currently saving all available funds (from the Building Fund/Donation Can) to build a wooden altar for the chapel. The general goal is a custom-built wooden altar, about the size of our current makeshift altar, dark brown in color, with attractive, elaborate trim, which won’t require a veil to hang over the front to hide what is underneath. Perhaps engrave “Viva Cristo Rey” or “IHS” on the front of it. It will have extra depth towards the back, to add a “part 2” at a later date, which will rise upwards about six feet, mounted to the back of the altar. The altar will also have a place for an altar stone, and a means to secure the tabernacle to it. In any case, we will be keeping the dark brown “gradines” currently on the altar, as well as our large Crucifix.
Traditional Catholic Question – Isn’t it necessary for a Catholic to submit to the Pope in Rome? Isn’t that how Catholicism works? Answer: Under normal circumstances, yes — but not in 2016. Today’s circumstances are anything but normal. The post-Vatican 2 era is the darkest and deepest crisis that the Church has ever experienced — including the Arian heresy, the Great Schism, and the Protestant Revolt. These crises were serious for the Church, but they never involved the Church hierarchy contradicting or corrupting the Catholic Faith. Never before 1969 did the Church ever thrown out Her liturgy wholesale, replacing it with something man-made, a liturgy soaked with Freemasonic, protestant, and other modern errors. Why did God allow this? That is a mystery. But what Catholics must do is not mysterious; we are certain that God wants us to save our souls: that is why He created us. But to save our souls, we need God and His grace; we need the Holy Sacrifice of Mass and life-giving Sacraments. So until this Crisis is sorted out by a future Pope or Council, we need to preserve and practice our Faith, safely holding on to what we know: Catholic doctrine and practices hundreds of years old, from before Vatican 2. And the centerpiece of this Tradition is the Tridentine Mass, canonized by Pope St. Pius V almost 450 years ago in “Quo Primum”. Obedience is an important virtue, but that obedience must be subordinate to the three Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. When Faith and Obedience are at odds, we are obligated to choose the higher of the two virtues: Faith.

High Mass today – Today is the 1st Sunday of the month, so we will have a High Mass followed by a Potluck.

Traditional Catholic question – Must any Traditional Latin Masses be offered under the auspices of an organization and/or with the approval of Rome? Answer: No. Regarding the question of Roman approval: Post-Vatican II Rome has become drunk with the heresy of Modernism, with the highest officials trying to destroy the Church with their own hands. The exact nature of this Crisis in the Church is mysterious, and we have to remember that God is in control. But what is certain is that we must keep and practice the Catholic Faith, and save our immortal souls here in 2016. We can’t wait for normal times to return. The Crisis is the Church has been ongoing for over 47 years now! Priests, bishops, and laymen must all do the right thing — with or without the permission of Rome. In the Catholic Church, “the highest law is the salvation of souls.” When Truth and Authority mysteriously split, we have no choice but to choose Truth — the only thing that will get us to heaven. Jesus Christ is the Truth. As for the question of an organization, that is more or less irrelevant. The only real issue is authority/jurisdiction, and the Catholic Church provides us “supplied jurisdiction” during emergency situations like the one we are living in today. Unless a given organization has been approved by Rome, it has the same standing as any individual Traditional Catholic priest offering the Tridentine Mass without Rome’s permission. The only difference is that an organization has many priests, while the individual priest is alone. But, in reality, both are equally legitimate given the emergency situation we are in.

Over 13 Months of Masses – Fathers Zendejas and Garcia have been making the 3 1/4 to 4 1/2 hour trip from Houston to Seguin every Sunday for over 13 months now! (The first Sunday Mass was May 10, 2015.) And during that whole time, they only missed one Sunday, when Bishop Faure visited the United States last November. We are most grateful to our priests for their dedication in making the drive here every Sunday.

Here is the chapel, less than 1 year later. Wooden pews, Stations of the Cross, Mass vestments, pictures, kneeler, holy water font, altar upgrades, A/C upgrades, sidewalk upgrades, and dozens of other improvements and upgrades. Plus we have an organist now. A big thank you to all our benefactors (both far and near) over the past year — may God reward you!

Mothers’ Day – We would like to wish all mothers a very happy Mothers’ Day! Fr. Zendejas said we should especially pray for our mothers and grandmothers in the weeks before Mothers’ Day.

Beware Mass Time Change! – TODAY (March 6th) we will have Low Mass at 8:00 AM instead of the usual 4:00 PM. Also, our usual monthly High Mass and potluck will be moved to the SECOND Sunday of March (March 13th) — when Mass will return to the normal 4:00 PM time.
Rejoice Sunday – Today is Laetare (Latin, “Rejoice”) Sunday, or the half-way point of Lent. We should look back and assess our Lent so far, and redouble our efforts going forward. Only 3 weeks until Easter! Because of the feast today, the altar is decorated with flowers unlike the other Sundays of Lent.
More New Sidewalk – The chapel’s concrete sidewalk has been extended to 64 feet long! The sidewalk is necessary whenever it rains, due to mud and water runoff. If you wish to make a donation towards this chapel improvement, you can use the donation can on the table by the main entrance.

Fr. Voigt Mass – Fr. Richard Voigt will be visiting St. Dominic’s today (Feb. 14th) to offer Mass. He will also be distributing Ashes after Mass. Fr. Voigt is a Salesian priest who came to Tradition several years ago and was conditionally ordained by Bishop Williamson.

Fr. Voigt Mass – This Sunday, we welcome back Fr. Richard Voigt who will be visiting St. Dominic’s to offer Mass. It also happens to be the feast of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian order. Fr. Voigt is a Salesian priest who came to Tradition several years ago and was conditionally ordained by Bishop Williamson.
High Mass Next Week – Next Sunday, February 7th, we will have our usual High Mass with a Potluck afterwards.

St. Dominic’s Chapel, being situated on acreage in the country, is a noticeable distance from the parking area. When it rains, this causes some inconvenience as the Faithful have to walk through parts of the yard to get to the chapel. The solution was clear: put in a nice, four-foot-wide concrete sidewalk. A poured concrete sidewalk is much smoother, looks much nicer, and is much easier to maintain than a jigsaw puzzle arrangement of rectangular paver bricks.

Fortunately, the sidewalk can be built in sections. The typical dimensions of a new section are 4′ wide by 8′ long.

We used to have 2 sections of concrete sidewalk, totaling 16 feet. Now it’s 60 feet long. That 44 feet of sidewalk cost about $780 for four tons of concrete (8,000 lbs) and labor.

Fr. Voigt Mass – Next Sunday (January 31st), we welcome back Fr. Richard Voigt who will be visiting St. Dominic’s to offer Mass. It also happens to be the feast of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian order. Fr. Voigt is a Salesian priest who came to Tradition several years ago and was conditionally ordained by Bishop Williamson.

Last week had enough big news, but we have some more extraordinary news this week — St. Dominic’s Chapel now has proper Catholic pews, just like every church or chapel you’ve ever been in! 12 of them to be exact. And don’t forget we’re having Mass here at 10:00 AM next Saturday, on August 15th.

Pews Installed – St. Dominic’s Chapel was able to acquire (12) eleven-foot, solid oak pews with padded kneelers! They have been installed in the chapel, which has never looked better! It’s really starting to look like a proper Latin Mass chapel now. The pews are a dark brown color and very traditional in their design. These are typical pews with kneelers, just as you’ve seen in all the churches you’ve ever been in. Donations to help cover this cost can be placed in the Donations can by the main door.

They had to be picked up in Houston, TX about 240 miles away. It was quite a drive, as Houston is quite a bit further away than Austin, San Marcos or one of the many other cities it’s easy to get to from here. Normally San Antonio is pretty independent of Houston, but in the world of Traditional Latin Mass chapels, we are going to be very involved with Houston for the forseeable future!

Transporting these pews to the chapel was a much bigger deal than ordering a 1962 Missal, thurible, or incense boat (which is shipped right to you) — but to make St. Dominic’s seem more like a proper church, it was well worth it! Churches are expected to have pews.

Holy Day this Saturday – Mass on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will be at 10:00 AM.

Mass Time Change – After today, Sunday Mass time will change to 4:00 PM to allow Father more time to travel here from Houston. Sunday morning traffic made it difficult for him to get here at 2:30. Plus he is changing the Mass time in Houston to be 1 hour later. Sometimes travel between the two churches is difficult, due to weekend or daytime traffic.

Stella Maris Chapel – For those curious about how things are going at our neighboring chapel in Houston: As of August 2nd, the new chapel property outside Houston is being used for Mass for the group of traditional Catholics there. The priests’ residence or rectory on the property was also vacated by the previous owners about this time (there was some resistance on the part of the renters to move out, but they did move out during the 30 day timeframe). Currently, work on the refurbishing the various buildings (including the chapel, rectory and school) is proceeding at a fast pace. This is great news for the Church in south-central Texas.

Congratulations to Traditional Catholics in Houston, Texas! And the Catholic Church in general will benefit by this new outpost of Catholic Tradition. Talk about building up the Church, even as the Conciliar Church sells off churches, schools, and other properties to pay for unmentionable and shameful lawsuits!

Fr. Zendejas recently purchased a church property south of Houston (in La Marque, TX) which includes a chapel or church, school, and rectory. Christened “Stella Maris Chapel” (star of the sea in Latin, one of the titles of Our Lady), the chapel was blessed by Bishop Williamson on July 6, 2015. He and Fr. Adrian Garcia will be saying Mass there on a weekly if not a daily basis.

This extraordinary news is important for the Catholic Church, but especially for all Traditional Catholics who attend traditional churches throughout Texas, since we now have another bulwark of the Faith so close by in Houston. It will certainly benefit St. Dominic’s and other traditional churches, especially in the San Antonio and Austin areas, in the long run. It isn’t every day that a new “priory” or chapel/rectory/school complex is added to the world of Catholic Tradition. Deo Gratias!

Ready for Summer – We’ve installed a new, larger 25000 BTU air conditioner in the chapel. After trying it out last Sunday, it looks like we’re all set to stay comfortable during the hot Texas Summer! Sidewalk Improvements

St. Dominic’s chapel now has a 4-foot-wide concrete sidewalk by the main entrance. So far, this permanent portion of sidewalk is 16 feet long. This should make life a lot easier, especially on rainy days. The San Antonio and Austin areas have received a lot of rain during April, May and June.

The second section alone took 24 bags of concrete — that’s about 3/4 of a ton!

It really makes getting to the chapel a lot more pleasant. More sections of sidewalk will follow in the Fall, when it cools off a bit.

New Air Conditioner

To make sure St. Dominic’s chapel is ready for the long, hot Texas Summer, we got a new 25,000 BTU air conditioner! We took advantage of special financing to buy and install it. Donations to help cover this expense can be placed in the donation can near the door of the chapel.

The 1200 sq. foot chapel now has 3 air conditioners totaling 51,000 BTU. That’s a lot of cooling power. The San Antonio and Austin areas are not known for their mild summers — at least now we’re ready! And once Summer starts to fade, and the high temps drop below 90, it’s going to be even better than it is now. We could make it as chilly as an ice cream establishment if we wanted to.

New Driveway – After the record May rainfall around San Antonio and Austin washed out much of the driveway, our hosts have now re-topped the drive with new gravel. Please drive slowly to prevent the powder (which will eventually pack down) from blowing away in a dust cloud. The hosts — and your vehicle — will thank you!

 

Chapel improvements and projects

We are always looking to improve St. Dominic’s Chapel, including the equipment, chapel environment, grounds, etc.

Two weeks ago, we got a new statue of Our Lady of Fatima on “permanent loan” from a parishioner.

A few days ago, we repaired the very long gravel driveway. New gravel was added and the whole thing was smoothed and widened. Although this wasn’t done with chapel funds, it does certainly benefit the chapel as most people arrive here by car!

Meanwhile, the area under the 3-car carport was cleared out to fit an extra vehicle. It is noticeably more spacious now.

The same day, we poured the first section of a new sidewalk. We started at the chapel entrance, with an 8′ section. We hope to add another 8′ section this Saturday. The paving bricks that made up the previous “makeshift sidewalk” will be used to extend the sidewalk even closer to the parking area, which will help out on future rainy Sundays.

The sidewalk was done with the community spirit of a “barn raising”, with several boys helping out with the mixing of 1/2 a ton of concrete.

Pictures will follow in the coming days. Things have been very busy here in the past week; we are busy getting ready for the next work day, planned for this Saturday. We will keep you posted on our progress!
