2018 San Antonio Mission Pilgrimage – schedule, details, map, route, and more!

2018 San Antonio Mission Pilgrimage		October 27, 2018

Bishop Zendejas is organizing a pilgrimage to the San Antonio Missions on Saturday, October 27, 2018— the day before the Feast of Christ the King. There will be Mass at 11:30 AM near Mission San José. All are invited to the Mass and/or Pilgrimage. There will be organizers at San José directing everyone to the designated location for Mass. Even if you are not able to walk the whole route, you are still encouraged to assist at Mass and/or drive to each Mission for prayers, short sermons, Catholic hymns, and participation in a public act of faith with fellow Traditional Catholics. Nothing strengthens one’s faith like public actions witnessing to the Catholic Faith. SCHEDULE 9:00 AM – Gather at Mission San José (park vehicles in nearby parking lot) 9:30 AM – Begin Pilgrimage towards Mission Concepción via the Mission Trail, then walk back to Mission San José for Mass. 11:30 AM – Mass at Mission San José 12:30 PM – Lunch (bring your own food and snacks) and conference 1:30 PM – Continue pilgrimage to last two Missions (San Juan and Espada). At the end, vehicles will shuttle pilgrims back to Mission San José WHAT TO BRING • Both men and women should dress appropriately for Mass and visits to the Mission chapels. Normal pilgrim attire includes modest, lightweight and light-colored clothing, comfortable shoes, hats, sunglasses, etc. Please keep an eye on the weather forecast as the day of the Pilgrimage approaches. • Anything needed for Mass and prayer (missals, prayerbooks, rosaries, chapel veils) • Water, food, snacks, and anything else a family might need on a hike. Mass on FIRST Saturday, September 1st – At 4:00 PM, Fr. Reginald Brocard, O.P. will offer Mass here. Fr. Reginald is visiting from the Dominican convent in Avrille, France. Father will be the first Dominican priest to offer Mass here at St. Dominic’s Chapel.
Potluck after Mass – Please join us for a potluck after Mass, where everyone will get a chance to meet and talk with Father. We believe it is worthwhile and important to socialize with other Traditional Catholics, since we are geographically isolated from each other, and often attacked from all sides in this decadent modern world.
First Saturday – The First Saturday of every month is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Update: Fr. Chazal HIGH MASS moved to Sunday, July 15th at 4:00 PM

Mass has been upgraded to a HIGH MASS, and will be at 4:00 PM as usual, on Sunday, July 15th. It is the 8th Sunday after Pentecost. A potluck is planned after Mass as usual. Hope to see you there!

Mass on SUNDAY, July 15th – At 4:00 PM, Fr. Francois Chazal will offer a HIGH MASS at St. Dominic’s Chapel. Fr. Chazal is a missionary priest and rector of Heart of Jesus and Mary Seminary, a Traditional Catholic seminary in the Philippines. Father has labored tirelessly in Asia for many years. We will have a potluck after the Mass, so everyone will get a chance to meet and talk with Father — please feel free to join us!
Let’s Give Fr. Chazal a Warm Texas Welcome – Father has come all the way from the Philippines just to visit a handful of places in the USA, and two of them are Stella Maris Chapel (outside Houston) and St. Dominic’s. We are honored to have him offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass here at our chapel!
Stats Corner – Fr. Chazal will be the 11th priest to offer Mass at St. Dominic’s Chapel. The first Mass was offered here in 2013.

Quinquagesima Sunday – Quinquagesima is the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Quinquagesima means “50th day” because it is (roughly) 50 days before Easter.
Lent begins this Wednesday – This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Ash Wednesday is a day of mandatory fasting and abstinence, even in the permissive Conciliar Church. The imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday (or the following Sunday) is a sacramental, during which the priest repeats the words God spoke to Adam, “Thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return.”

Potluck after Mass – We will have our usual potluck after Mass. Among other things, we will belatedly celebrate the birthday of our Blessed Mother (September 8th). It may be a week late, but better late than never!
Prayers Requested – There are many Traditional Catholics living in the Houston area who suffered losses during the recent hurricane, including some parishioners of Bishop Zendejas’ chapel outside Houston. Thanks be to God, Stella Maris Chapel escaped unscathed. But the same cannot be said for the homes of many Traditional Catholic parishioners living in and around the Houston area. Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us!

A quick reminder: Bishop Zendejas will be offering Mass here at St. Dominic’s tomorrow (August 14th) at 4:00 PM.

But looking back to our last Mass here:

Fr. Edward McDonald’s visit to St. Dominic’s Chapel on 7/23/17 went very well. We had at least 43 people in attendance.

We all look forward to hosting Fr. McDonald again sometime!

No Potluck – Since the Vigil of the Assumption is traditionally a day of Fast and Abstinence, plus other reasons, there will not be a potluck after Mass this time. But there will be donuts and other refreshments available.

More Sidewalk – You will probably notice that the long sidewalk to the chapel is a bit longer now — 8.5 feet longer to be precise. We recently poured another 2 sections of concrete, which replaces even more of the old paver bricks. Just one more concrete section is needed to reach all the way to the back porch!

Continued Chapel Improvements – On the day after the most recent Mass at St. Dominic’s, we began several chapel improvement projects. Work is being done to stain the new altar. Continued Chapel Improvements – It is easier to do construction projects when the chapel is closed, even if that closure is only temporary. So last Monday we began several chapel improvement projects. Work is being done to stain the new altar. The chapel sidewalk will also be enlarged, replacing more of the paver bricks. His Excellency, Bishop Richard Williamson offered a High Mass at Stella Maris Chapel (La Marque, TX, a short distance from Houston, TX) which was followed by a conference and potluck.

Stella Maris Chapel is the main chapel or headquarters for Fr. Zendejas’ apostolate in Texas. Fr. Zendejas and Fr. Garcia serve St. Dominic’s Chapel from their base at Stella Maris Chapel.

Mission Pilgrimage Cancelled – We have been forced to cancel the Mission Pilgrimage originally planned for October 22nd. If we have Mass that week, it will likely be a substitute priest.

Progress on New Altar, Backdrop, and Altar Step

On late Saturday, we finished building the new altar. Earlier this week, the hardwood flooring was installed on the altar step, and many hours were spent improving the look of the white backdrop.

Still to be done: install altar trim, stain the altar dark brown, building another gradine (a wooden box placed on the altar, on which the candlesticks are set) and other finishing touches.

The chapel was a cluttered, sawdust-strewn construction zone as recently as Saturday at 8:00 PM. We hope to finish the chapel cleaning at the earliest opportunity.

Hoping to Build an Altar – We are currently saving all available funds (from the Building Fund/Donation Can) to build a wooden altar for the chapel. The general goal is a custom-built wooden altar, about the size of our current makeshift altar, dark brown in color, with attractive, elaborate trim, which won’t require a veil to hang over the front to hide what is underneath. Perhaps engrave “Viva Cristo Rey” or “IHS” on the front of it. It will have extra depth towards the back, to add a “part 2” at a later date, which will rise upwards about six feet, mounted to the back of the altar. The altar will also have a place for an altar stone, and a means to secure the tabernacle to it. In any case, we will be keeping the dark brown “gradines” currently on the altar, as well as our large Crucifix.
Traditional Catholic Question – Isn’t it necessary for a Catholic to submit to the Pope in Rome? Isn’t that how Catholicism works? Answer: Under normal circumstances, yes — but not in 2016. Today’s circumstances are anything but normal. The post-Vatican 2 era is the darkest and deepest crisis that the Church has ever experienced — including the Arian heresy, the Great Schism, and the Protestant Revolt. These crises were serious for the Church, but they never involved the Church hierarchy contradicting or corrupting the Catholic Faith. Never before 1969 did the Church ever thrown out Her liturgy wholesale, replacing it with something man-made, a liturgy soaked with Freemasonic, protestant, and other modern errors. Why did God allow this? That is a mystery. But what Catholics must do is not mysterious; we are certain that God wants us to save our souls: that is why He created us. But to save our souls, we need God and His grace; we need the Holy Sacrifice of Mass and life-giving Sacraments. So until this Crisis is sorted out by a future Pope or Council, we need to preserve and practice our Faith, safely holding on to what we know: Catholic doctrine and practices hundreds of years old, from before Vatican 2. And the centerpiece of this Tradition is the Tridentine Mass, canonized by Pope St. Pius V almost 450 years ago in “Quo Primum”. Obedience is an important virtue, but that obedience must be subordinate to the three Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. When Faith and Obedience are at odds, we are obligated to choose the higher of the two virtues: Faith.

For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die: but if by the Spirit you mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live. For whosoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Traditional Catholic question – Must any Traditional Latin Masses be offered under the auspices of an organization and/or with the approval of Rome? Answer: No. Regarding the question of Roman approval: Post-Vatican II Rome has become drunk with the heresy of Modernism, with the highest officials trying to destroy the Church with their own hands. The exact nature of this Crisis in the Church is mysterious, and we have to remember that God is in control. But what is certain is that we must keep and practice the Catholic Faith, and save our immortal souls here in 2016. We can’t wait for normal times to return. The Crisis is the Church has been ongoing for over 47 years now! Priests, bishops, and laymen must all do the right thing — with or without the permission of Rome. In the Catholic Church, “the highest law is the salvation of souls.” When Truth and Authority mysteriously split, we have no choice but to choose Truth — the only thing that will get us to heaven. Jesus Christ is the Truth. As for the question of an organization, that is more or less irrelevant. The only real issue is authority/jurisdiction, and the Catholic Church provides us “supplied jurisdiction” during emergency situations like the one we are living in today. Unless a given organization has been approved by Rome, it has the same standing as any individual Traditional Catholic priest offering the Tridentine Mass without Rome’s permission. The only difference is that an organization has many priests, while the individual priest is alone. But, in reality, both are equally legitimate given the emergency situation we are in.

High Mass next week – Next Sunday is the 1st Sunday of the month, so we will have a High Mass followed by a Potluck.
SSPX Superiors Meeting – Though they wish to keep it a secret, the SSPX superiors are in fact having a meeting June 26-28 in Switzerland, during which they will discuss the latest proposal from Rome for a practical agreement. Apparently they were so keen on secrecy that they forgot a basic Catholic behavior: while considering such an important and far-reaching decision, they should solicit the prayers of the Faithful.
Traditional Catholicism 101 – Traditional Catholics are those who love the Catholic Faith and doctrine, and want to remain faithful during this unprecedented Crisis in the Church. And what is the Crisis? That truth and authority are at odds with each other! We must choose “truth”, because we have to keep the Faith and save our souls. Therefore we leave our local parishes (which have authority over us, from the Pope down through our local bishops) and seek out priests with valid orders who will offer 100% certain Masses and preach only pre-Vatican II, error-free Catholic doctrine. Catholics have a right to doubt-free Masses and Sacraments; this is the primary principle of the Traditional movement. An “indult” or permission from the Pope or local bishop is not necessary. The encyclical “Quo Primum” of Pope St. Pius V states that the Tridentine Mass can be offered by any priest, and attended by any Catholic, without scruple (i.e., concern that he is doing something wrong).
Over 13 Months of Masses – Frs. Zendejas and Garcia have been making the 3 1/4 to 4 1/2 hour trip from Houston to Seguin every Sunday for over 13 months now! (since May 10, 2015.) During that time, they only missed one Sunday, when Bishop Faure visited the United States last November. We are most grateful to our priests for their dedication in making the drive here every Sunday.

About 1 year ago, June 14th 2015. The chapel has come a long way since then!

 

Here is the chapel, less than 1 year later. Wooden pews, Stations of the Cross, Mass vestments, pictures, kneeler, holy water font, altar upgrades, A/C upgrades, sidewalk upgrades, and dozens of other improvements and upgrades. Plus we have an organist now. A big thank you to all our benefactors (both far and near) over the past year — may God reward you!

Welcome His Excellency to St. Dominic’s – Today, May 22nd, His Excellency Bishop Richard Williamson is offering a High Mass at our chapel. Please welcome Fr. Garcia here as well.
Potluck after Mass – As planned, there will be a Texas Bar-B-Q “Episcopal potluck” after the High Mass today to celebrate His Excellency’s visit to our humble chapel. Please bring a dish and join us in our celebration. His Excellency will be there to visit with the Faithful. It’s not every day one gets to have dinner with a Bishop present!
High Mass – In honor of Our Lady as well as the Most Holy Trinity, we will sing Mass IX (“cum jubilo”), as well as Credo IV. We will also sing “O God Almighty Father”, “O Mary of Graces” and “Holy God We Praise Thy Name”.
Bishop Williamson Conference – Tomorrow, May 23rd, Bishop Williamson will be offering Mass at Stella Maris Chapel outside Houston, with a meal and conference afterwards. Stella Maris Chapel is located at 1131 Delaney Rd, La Marque, TX 77568.

Bishop Williamson coming to St. Dominic’s – Next Sunday, May 22nd, His Excellency Bishop Richard Williamson will be offering a High Mass at St. Dominic’s. There will be a potluck afterwards. His Excellency hasn’t been to the San Antonio area since 2005. This is an excellent opportunity to meet him and hear him in person!

Chapel Improvements – Work is underway to make St. Dominic’s look as beautiful as possible for the Bishop’s visit. We have need of volunteers willing to help clean the chapel, altar, and help with other small projects. Financial contributions to the chapel “building fund” donation can are also appreciated, since most projects have a material cost. If you are interested in volunteering, please speak to Matthew.
