| Holy Week at Stella Maris Chapel – Bishop Williamson will be celebrating Holy Week Liturgy at Stella Maris Chapel (La Marque, TX, outside Houston) starting on April 13th. On Holy Thursday at 7:00 AM, Bishop Williamson will begin the Holy Week Liturgy by offering a Chrismal Mass, a rare Mass that requires a bishop. During this Mass, a bishop confects holy oils, including Holy Chrism, Oil of the Sick and Oil of the Catechumens. These holy oils are used in various sacraments, including Baptism, Confirmation, and Extreme Unction. The Bishop will be at Stella Maris through Easter Sunday. | Continued Chapel Improvements – On the day after the most recent Mass at St. Dominic’s, we began several chapel improvement projects. Work is being done to stain the new altar. The chapel sidewalk has also been lengthened by 10 feet, replacing dozens of paver bricks. And stay tuned for the announcement of another major chapel improvement! |

Stella Maris Chapel is the main chapel or headquarters for Fr. Zendejas’ apostolate in Texas. Fr. Zendejas and Fr. Garcia serve St. Dominic’s Chapel from their base at Stella Maris Chapel.

| Mission Pilgrimage Cancelled – We have been forced to cancel the Mission Pilgrimage originally planned for October 22nd. If we have Mass that week, it will likely be a substitute priest. | |||
| Good News – We have been upgrading the altar and sanctuary. So far, the altar backdrop has been enlarged, and there is a nice wooden step under the altar complete with hardwood flooring. A new altar has been built; it only needs to be stained and decorated. A big “thank you” to all those who contributed to this project so far! | |||

Apparently they were so keen on secrecy that they forgot a basic Catholic behavior: while considering such an important and far-reaching decision, they should solicit the prayers of the Faithful. | |||
| Traditional Catholicism 101 – Traditional Catholics are those who love the Catholic Faith and doctrine, and want to remain faithful during this unprecedented Crisis in the Church. And what is the Crisis? That truth and authority are at odds with each other! We must choose “truth”, because we have to keep the Faith and save our souls. Therefore we leave our local parishes (which have authority over us, from the Pope down through our local bishops) and seek out priests with valid orders who will offer 100% certain Masses and preach only pre-Vatican II, error-free Catholic doctrine. Catholics have a right to doubt-free Masses and Sacraments; this is the primary principle of the Traditional movement. An “indult” or permission from the Pope or local bishop is not necessary. The encyclical “Quo Primum” of Pope St. Pius V states that the Tridentine Mass can be offered by any priest, and attended by any Catholic, without scruple (i.e., concern that he is doing something wrong). | |||
| Over 13 Months of Masses – Frs. Zendejas and Garcia have been making the 3 1/4 to 4 1/2 hour trip from Houston to Seguin every Sunday for over 13 months now! (since May 10, 2015.) During that time, they only missed one Sunday, when Bishop Faure visited the United States last November. Catholics from a large radius around San Antonio, from as far away as Austin, Georgetown, Seguin, Columbus and Bandera came to St. Dominic’s Chapel on the first Sunday of October for our monthly High Mass. And, of course, Fr. Zendejas came all the way from Houston! This was also a special occasion, as it was the first time our new volunteer organist, a boy just 9 years old, played organ accompaniment during Mass. We have some extraordinary news items this week — a feast in honor of our patron, and a Holy Day Mass coming up on August 15th!
Feast of St. Dominic – This Sunday we will be celebrating the feast of our patron, St. Dominic. St. Dominic saved the Church from the Albigensian heretical scourge many centuries ago, and we plan to honor this friend of God — and our chapel’s patron — on his feast day. There will be High Mass followed by a pot luck and a few games for the children. Please join us in our joyful celebration!
High Mass this Sunday – August 2nd is the 1st Sunday of the month, so there will be a High Mass this Sunday. We will be singing Kyrie XI and Credo I. You will find the Gregorian chant for Mass XI in your Traditional Roman Hymnal or hand missal.
Holy Day coming up – Mark your calendars! Mass on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will be at 10:00 AM. The Church rejoices on this great feast day of the Blessed Mother. We are happy to celebrate the Assumption on August 15th, as it should be, rather than on the following Sunday as is done in countless modern, Vatican II Catholic churches.
We were literally blessed to have a Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament after Mass at our chapel last Sunday. Benedictio is Latin for “blessing”. A lot has changed in the Church since Vatican 2 started in 1962, but there are still places where everything is beautifully and perfectly Catholic. A church here, a small chapel there. Resistance to reckless change is a virtue. (How sad that a reverent Mass is now something extraordinary! In fact, the modern Church even calls our Tridentine Mass the Extraordinary Form) We sang O Salutaris Hostia, Tantum Ergo, and many other traditional Catholic hymns in Latin. Everyone in the chapel was glad to have attended, and all were very grateful to Fr. Zendejas. I’m sure St. Anthony is also grateful that there is such a devout and faithful priest near the city named after him (San Antonio).
But here’s a thought — The blessed Patron of our city, San Antonio, if he came back to earth today, he would instantly recognize our Mass (1962 Missal) as a Mass of the Catholic Church, since the form is almost the same. But what would he think of the Novus Ordo? This Mass (Novus Ordo Missae) is more than just a new form of Mass; it suits a whole different religion. It is the Tridentine Mass stripped down to a bare skeleton, with new human elements inserted to flesh out its form. Thus we must keep up our resistance to the modern world and Vatican 2, even though both are embraced completely by the modern Church. Countless damage was done to the Church after the changes of Vatican 2 were implemented in the early 1970’s. By the Church’s direction, our arms were laid down, the white flag was raised, and our resistance to the evils of the modern world was dropped. Many Catholics stopped going to Mass (at least regular weekly Mass), vocations were abandoned or lost, and some Catholics stopped believing many dogmas of our Catholic Faith over the course of the next few decades.

Ready for Summer – We’ve installed a new, larger 25000 BTU air conditioner in the chapel. After trying it out last Sunday, it looks like we’re all set to stay comfortable during the hot Texas Summer! San Antonio doesn’t have a reputation for mild summers. Donations to help cover this expense can be placed in the donation can near the door of the chapel.
Here are a couple pictures from last Sunday’s Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The hymns sung during the service (O Salutaris Hostia, Ave Maria, Oremus Pro Pontifice, Tantum Ergo, Adoremus in Aeternum, and Holy God We Praise Thy Name) were prepared into booklets, so everyone could easy follow along and join in the singing. The singing went well, too — we had a sufficient choir, so the singing was on-key.
Fr. Zendejas will offer the Mass this Sunday, June 7th, and after Mass there will be an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
This Sunday is the solemnity of the Feast of Corpus Christi.
